Dyer Ancestors

I will add more information to this page at some point, but I wanted to place an interesting link here.

The ancestry of Dr. William Dyer of Truro, Massachusetts (he died in 1738), great-grandfather of Micah Dyer (1768-1847) has been a matter of some discussion over the years.  Was he the son of Samuel Dyer (the son of Mary Barrett Dyer) and Anne Hutchinson (the granddaughter of Anne Marbury Hutchinson)?  Dr. Dyer's gravestone in Truro, Massachusetts suggests that perhaps he was not.  If he was really 85 in 1738, as the gravestone suggests, then he could not have been the son of Samuel and Anne -- Anne was only 10 years old in 1653.  (This is not the original gravestone, but I believe the original gravestone also stated that he was 85 years of age at his death.)

We know that Samuel Dyer and Anne Hutchinson Dyer had a son by the name of William, born in Boston on March 7, 1663.  Apparently there are no subsequent records relating to this William Dyer in either Boston or Rhode Island.  Are Dr. William Dyer and this William Dyer the same person?  As of today (7/28/2022), I would say that there's a chance of it being so, but it's not clear.

I don't agree with every suggestion in the following article, which is not scholarly and does not cite any sources one can easily verify, but the article makes a case, based on circumstantial evidence (which I haven't verified), that the men are one and the same, and some respected genealogists (humans, of course -- not infallible), perhaps having additional information, have adopted this position.
